{2}- Astoria Krane- What Did I Just Hear?
Dear Reader,
First off, I have to tell you about the noises.... and maybe it's nothing, but this isn't my first time around farms or wildlife or nature in general. Since I'm couped up in the house for most of the time, Dad is letting me help out our neighbors Alan and Betty, on their farm. He works with someone's brother's uncle's dad or something like that... anyway, he knows this family and he felt like it would be mutually beneficial for us. I help them and they help me to get out of the house. It's a win-win! Plus they are super nice! Well, that is until the noises started happening. They just started acting strange.
It was a low, gut-wrenching... growl, but not like what you'd think a dog or even a bear would make... this was much bigger. And it just didn't sound right, something was way off. I asked the neighbors about it and they were almost too quick to dismiss the sound even though we were all working in the sheep pen. They just brushed it off like the cows sometimes make the craziest sounds. Betty said sometimes they are cranky when they don't get fed on time, but something made me think that she wasn't referring to the cows.
I know... I have completely lost it, right?
But then... I heard it again and this time another sound followed it... like a high-pitched shrieking sound. This time the neighbors looked up when I heard the sound, so I knew I wasn't the only one that heard it. They seemed to notice that I was noticing them, so Alan started looking over at his wife, Betty. "If patrol didn't hear that, we should let them know just in case any tram guides are still out. I bet you anything that was some coyotes or maybe a pack of dogs. I don't want them near the farm, especially right now."
Betty, just nodded and came over to me, "Oh sweet child, it's really okay, we get some of the more exciting wildlife out this direction sometimes because of the farm animals, but no worries... you are safe with us. Actually, why don't I walk you back over to your house and Alan will call a few people to do some patrol on this side of the mountain just in case."
Okay, listen... I know this is going to sound stupid, and I don't mean to be disrespectful to Betty because she is like the grandma I never had... but I felt like they wanted me out of the way so I wouldn't see what that really was that I was hearing. If it was just coyotes why are they making that big of a deal about it? Come on... really coyotes?? I know what they sound like... that was NOT a coyote.
When we got to my house, Betty closed the blinds and went around and checked all the doors and windows. She said she just felt safer if she double-checked the house since Dad wasn't home yet. I had their cell phone number just in case but honestly, you were lucky to get even one bar at the bottom of the mountain.
But then before she left, she said, "Stori sweety, no matter what you hear outside, don't open the blinds or the doors. Sometimes, living at the bottom of the mountain can be a bit spooky and your mind plays tricks on you. If I were you, I would just go ahead and get a good night's rest." She had even made me some hot chocolate before she left and honestly, I did feel pretty tired when she left and locked the door behind her. I went up to my room and laid on my bed for maybe 2 minutes when my eyes suddenly felt very heavy, but I could have sworn I heard a series of farm animals crying, a bunch of growling, and then I thought I heard a scream and then a pounding on the front door.
I couldn't tell you if it was a dream or what but trying to tell my dad stuff is pointless. He just yammers on about me being an overdramatic teenager.
Until Next Time...
Stori
